Preventive Care

To keep your teeth for a lifetime, you must remove the plaque from your teeth, gums,  and implants every day with proper brushing and flossing. Regular dental visits are also important. Daily cleaning will help keep calculus and bacteria formation to a minimum, but it will not completely prevent it. A frequent professional prophy as recommended by your dentist or hygienist is necessary to remove deposits from places your toothbrush and floss may have missed.  As each person’s needs are different, your recommended prophy intervals will based on your clinical needs.

Our practice offers preventive care that includes regular oral examinations, blood pressure and  oral cancer screenings, regularly scheduled continuing care appointments, adult and child prophylaxis, fluoride treatments, sealants, professional breath control, implant maintenance and periodontal services (gum disease therapy designed to help you maintain your smile’s health and beauty and to keep your teeth, gums, and supporting bone strong and disease-free.

A prophylaxis (regular cleaning) or periodontal maintenance is the removal of plaque, calculus, and stains from tooth structures around the crowns and/or roots of the teeth that have not been affected by bone loss (measured by gum pocket readings & radio-graphs), periodontal disease, or infection. There should be an absence of bleeding, tooth mobility, gum recession, or root exposure.

  • A prophylaxis is accomplished by manually scraping/scaling or using an electric device on the crowns of the teeth.
  • Periodontal maintenance is accomplished by manual scraping/scaling or using an electric device on both the crowns and exposed roots of teeth.
