At Dr. Chan’s practice in Gilroy, CA, dental implants offer patients a reliable foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural ones.
With implants, patients who have lost teeth regain the ability to eat comfortably and smile confidently, knowing their restored teeth look natural and help preserve facial contours.
What Are Dental Implants?
The implants, small titanium posts, are carefully placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing, creating a strong, lasting foundation as the bone bonds with the titanium. This structure not only supports artificial teeth but also helps prevent bone deterioration, a common issue when teeth are missing.
A dental crown, or artificial tooth, is then place on to the dental implant like real teeth. There are a few options for you based on how many teeth you are missing:
-
Single Crowns: A single crown on an implant is used to replace one missing tooth. It looks and functions like a natural tooth and is typically made of ceramic or porcelain fused to metal for durability and aesthetics.
-
Implant-Supported Bridges: For patients missing several teeth in a row, an implant-supported bridge can be used. Instead of requiring an implant for each missing tooth, this bridge attaches to two or more implants and supports multiple replacement teeth, which makes it more cost-effective.
-
Implant-Supported Dentures (Snap-On Dentures): These are used for patients missing most or all teeth in the upper or lower jaw. Implant-supported dentures can be removable or fixed. Removable options “snap” onto the implants, while fixed dentures are permanently attached, providing more stability than traditional dentures.
-
All-on-4 Implants: This full-arch restoration option uses four strategically placed implants to support a full set of upper or lower teeth. It’s a minimally invasive solution for patients needing a full arch replacement and is designed for same-day placement, often called “Teeth in a Day.”
-
Full-Arch Bridges: Unlike the All-on-4 technique, a full-arch bridge on implants may use more than four implants for increased stability. This solution is similar to a bridge and is ideal for a full jaw replacement with a fixed, permanent option.
Dr. Chan and our team can help you decide what type of implant device you will need based on how many teeth you’re missing, their location in the mouth, and your overall oral health.
Dental implants are truly life-changing, empowering people to rediscover the comfort of eating, speaking, laughing, and living with full confidence!
Evaluation for Dental Implants
If like many others, you feel implant dentistry is the choice for you, we ask that you undergo a dental/radiographic examination and health history. During these consultation visits, your specific needs and considerations will be addressed by either Dr. Chan or by an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon referred by our practice. Your questions and concerns are important to us and our team will work with you very closely to help make your procedure a success.
Dental Implant Procedure
Dental implants are metal anchors, which act as tooth root substitutes. They are surgically placed into the jawbone. Small posts are then attached to the implant, which protrudes through the gums. These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth.
For most patients, the placement of dental implants involves two surgical procedures. First, implants are placed within your jawbone. For the first three to six months following surgery, the implants are beneath the surface of the gums, gradually bonding with the jawbone. You should be able to wear temporary dentures and eat a soft diet during this time. At the same time, your restorative dentist designs the final bridgework or denture, which will ultimately improve both function and aesthetics.
Once the implants have integrated with the bone, the second phase of treatment begins. The implants are uncovered, and a small healing collar is attached. At this point, Dr. Chan will take impressions and start crafting your final replacement teeth, which are then fitted securely over the posts. The entire implant process usually spans six to eight months, with minimal disruption to your daily life.
